Great point G.Fraggle. Sad to think that in general elections there would be a first spot advantage. Yet, those ballots can get pretty long, eh?

Seriously, though, you make me think about looking into the scanning selection research with beginning communicators. I know I saw practical incidents of students choosing early in the scan during various types of selections. Interesting food for thought. -Sam

Ordering of candidates is by no means random in real elections. In New Hampshire, it is ordered by the number of votes the candidates' parties got in the previous election.
It is not known if there is a "first spot on ticket" advantage, but the parties argue over it as though the future of democracy itself depends on it.

The thing we like about Clicker is the ability to have the cells rearranged in a random fashion and also have the scanning done in a random order.

Mark,

Good idea using Clicker. That is great to hear about your students. Right on!

I realize that you could do it with Intellipics/ talk as well, if you made the text go into a box that had invisible print.

Our students are voting today for student council as well as for President and our State offices. We are using a Clicker 5 grid setup. We have 2 polling stations set up. One for kids who use switch scanning and the other station for kids who use a Touchscreen or regular mouse.
The votes are kept in the text field. Once the voting for all students is completed. We take the results into Pages and use the find feature to find out how many votes were registered for each student. Takes less than five minutes to tally.
Yesterday, we held a rally where each student was given 5 minutes to give speeches. It was a blast!
